Prayer For Protection From Evil Eyes

‘I take refuge with the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel.’ (Muwatta Imam Malik, Book 50, Hadith: 9)

Introduction of prayer:

According to a Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad confirmed that the evil eye, borne by jealousy or envy, is real and capable of causing harm or misfortune. Qur’an has discussed about the evil eyes of disbelievers while they used to look at the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh);

The disbelievers would almost cut you down with their eyes when they hear ˹you recite˺ the Reminder, and say, “He is certainly a madman.”(Surah Al-Qalam: 51)

In this Ayah is a proof that the effect of the evil eye and its affliction by the command of Allah is real.

Virtues of prayer:

أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ (‘I take refuge with the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel.’):

The term “evil eye” usually refers to harm that comes to a person because of someone else’s jealousy or envy towards them. The misfortune of the victim may manifest as Sickness, loss of wealth or family. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) advised to recite the above mentioned prayer and rub right hand on the effected area;

Uthman ibn Abi al-As came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Uthman said that he had a pain which was enough to kill him. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Rub it with your right hand seven times and say, ‘I take refuge with the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel.'(Muwatta Imam Malik: Book, 50; Hadith: 9)

In an other narration Sayyidah Aishah (RA) reported that the Prophet (pbuh) recited last three Surah of Qur’an on himself when he (pbuh) felt pain or uneasiness;

From A’isha (RA) that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he had a complaint, would recite the last three suras of Qur’an, over himself and blow. She said, “When his pain was great, I would recite it over him and wipe him with his right hand hoping for its blessing.” (Muwatta: Book; 50: Hadith: 10)

When any believer has to face the effects of evil eyes he should recite the above mentioned prayer for it. All the believers should say MashaAllah when they see something beautiful or when praising or admiring someone or something, as a reminder to themselves and others that all good things come from Allah. Jealousy and envy should not enter the heart of a person who believes that Allah has bestowed blessings on people according to His will.
