Prayer Against Fear & Oppression

Introduction of prayer:

this prayer refers to Sayyidna Musa and Sayyidna Haroon (as) when Allah Kareem chose Sayyidna Musa (as) and his brother Sayyidna Haroon (as) as His Messengers. He the exalted commanded them to go to Pharaoh (Fir’awn), the King of Egypt. The Pharaoh was a cruel and tyrant ruler. Sayyidna Musa and Sayyidna Haroon (as) pleaded to Allah and expressed their fear about the Pharaoh that he would punish or torture them. Allah Kareem responded to their supplication and consoled them. So, this is a powerful prayer against any tyrant and cruel ruler and all fears. This supplication gives comfort to the heart of believer that His Lord not let him alone and He is with him in all situations.

Exposition and virtues of prayer:

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَآ أَوْ أَن يَطْغَىٰ

They (Moses and Aaron) said: “Our Lord! We fear lest he hasten with insolence against us, or lest he transgress all bounds.”

When Allah Kareem commanded Sayyidna Musa and Haroon (as) to go to Pharaoh, they expressed twofold fears before Allah. The first fear is pointed out by the word أَن يَفْرُ‌طَ which means to cross all boundaries. So the meaning of the sentence is ‘perhaps the Pharaoh would attack even before listening to us’. (Ma’arif ul Quran)

The second fear was that, as they knew the Pharaoh was an arrogant and proud man. He may punish them even before listening to them. He was so powerful that he had started considering himself a god. So, Sayyidna Musa was afraid that he might treat them badly when they would present the message of the real God he would flare up in anger. This fear is expressed by the words أَن يَطْغَىٰ means to exceed the bounds.

Allah Kareem responded to the call of His Prophets and consoled them by saying;

قَالَ لَا تَخَافَآ ۖ إِنَّنِى مَعَكُمَآ أَسْمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ

Allah reassured ˹them˺, “Have no fear! I am with you, hearing and seeing. (20: 46)

Allah Kareem assured them that I am with you, ‘with you’ means Divine Support. Allah assured them that He Almighty is seeing and hearing them. Their affair is before Him and Pharaoh despite his great might and power would not be able to harm them.

When the prayer should be recited?

Any believer who has to face a tyrant and oppressed ruler and feels fear of being punished or harmed by him should recite this powerful prayer before going to him. He will find divine help against him, Insha’Allah
